01How it works

How we put fiber in the ground.

Directional drilling installs conduit under roads and existing utilities without open trenches. Here is the sequence on a typical crossing.

How horizontal directional drilling places fiber undergroundA drill rig bores a pilot hole under a road and existing water and gas lines while a locator tracks the drill head; a reamer then pulls conduit back through the bore from a reel; fiber optic cable is placed through the conduit; entry and exit pits are restored and the work is recorded.ROADWATERGASSAFE SEPARATIONEXITENTRY✓✓ RESTOREDHDD RIGCONDUIT REEL1PILOT BORE2REAM & PULL BACK CONDUIT3FIBER PLACED4RESTORE & RECORD

1Pilot bore

The rig steers a small pilot hole along the designed path while a locator tracks depth and position from the surface.

2Ream & pull back

On the way back, a reamer enlarges the bore and pulls the conduit into place from the reel.

3Fiber placed

Fiber optic cable is placed through the new conduit between access points.

4Restore & record

Entry and exit points are restored, and the installation is recorded for the as-built.

03On the job site

Built to be recognized.

The ZMB livery for trucks, trailers and equipment makes it clear who is working on the route — for the owner, the inspector and the neighbors.

04How we work

Disciplined from the first locate to the final as-built.

The same four steps on every job, so owners and general contractors always know where the work stands.

01

Review

Construction prints, permits and route conditions are reviewed before a crew mobilizes.

02

Locate

Existing utilities are located and marked before any bore or excavation begins.

03

Build

Bores, conduit and fiber are built to the print, segment by segment.

04

Document

Field records become accurate as-built prints for clean closeout and billing.

05Safety

Safety is the first line item on every job.

Underground work happens next to live gas, power and water lines, and beside traffic. The standard is simple: no bore or excavation starts until utilities are located and marked, and every crew works in a protected zone.

  • Locate and verify before any bore or excavation
  • Job briefings before work starts
  • Traffic control and protected work zones
  • Restoration that leaves the site as we found it
Our safety standards

Locate first

In Illinois, locates go through JULIE — or 811 Chicago inside the city limits — before work starts.

Proper PPE

Hard hats, high-visibility apparel and task-specific protection on every site.

Clean restoration

Pits, core holes and surfaces restored to match the site and the permit.

Accurate records

What went in the ground is recorded for the as-built — no guesswork later.

06Who we work with

A field partner for the teams that build networks.

Telecom operators

Underground construction that follows your standards and your print, segment by segment.

General contractors

A dependable subcontractor for HDD, conduit and fiber scopes, with clear daily progress.

Engineering firms

Field work that matches the design — and as-builts that match the field.

Owners & developers

Fiber and conduit pathways placed right the first time, ready for decades of service.
